Science Tokyo Summer Program 2026 (STSP 2026)
Dear Students,
We are happy to share the call for the Science Tokyo Summer Program 2026 (STSP 2026), a four-week, research-oriented summer program at the Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan.
Program details:
- Host: Institute of Science Tokyo (Ookayama & Yushima Campuses, Tokyo, Japan)
- Program dates: 2 July – 29 July 2026 (4 weeks)
- Main focus: Medical–engineering collaboration through special lectures, laboratory placement, and cultural activities
- Expected intake: Around 27 participants from partner universities
Program structure (tentative):
- 2 July: Orientation, guidance on campus life and living in Japan, and welcome event at Yushima Campus
- 3 July: Special lectures and campus tour at Ookayama Campus
- 6 July: Special lectures and campus tour at Yushima Campus
- 7–28 July: Laboratory placement and research training, plus about two Japanese cultural experience sessions
- 15 July: Mid-program reflection meeting
- 29 July: Final presentations, farewell event, and certificate presentation ceremony
Eligibility (set by Science Tokyo):
- Enrolled in a regular degree program at a Science Tokyo partner university
- Second-year undergraduate student or above, or a master’s student at the time of participation
- This program is exclusive for students persuing Science or Engineering
- Genuine interest in research training and student life at Science Tokyo
- English proficiency sufficient for scientific discussions and international academic settings
- Good physical and mental health
Program fee and costs:
- Program fee: JPY 150,000 for the July program (fee is not prorated)
- Accommodation: Program office can introduce options (e.g. shared houses), but students must arrange and pay for housing themselves
- Meals: Welcome event on 2 July and lunch/farewell event on 29 July are included; all other meals are self-funded
- Travel: International airfare and local transportation in Japan are borne by the student
- Insurance: Mandatory overseas travel insurance, plus a separate Science Tokyo insurance for experiments and training (approx. JPY 1,150–1,340)
- Other expenses: All additional personal and incidental costs during the stay are the student’s responsibility
Nomination and application process:
- Students must first be nominated by IIT Madras (Global Engagement Office)
- Nomination deadline (IITM to Science Tokyo): 10 January 2026, 5:00 PM JST
- After nomination, Science Tokyo will directly contact nominated students with the application form and instructions
- Student application deadline: 30 January 2026, 5:00 PM JST
Indicative list of required documents:
- Online application form (provided by Science Tokyo after nomination)
- Copy of passport (photo page)
- Certificate of enrollment
- Official academic transcript
- JPEG photograph
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the home university
- Proof of English proficiency (TOEIC/TOEFL or certificate issued by the home university; may be waived for some English-speaking countries)
- Additional documents as requested for certain research fields (e.g. vaccination certificate or portfolio)
Important notes:
- No academic credits will be awarded for this program
