Master's Program (SDG Professional Course) at Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT)

1. Program Overview

The SDG Professional Course is a graduate-level engineering program built on the foundation of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is designed to train practical engineers, researchers, and educators from around the world. Students who complete the course requirements alongside their Master’s degree will receive a special Certificate of Completion.

2. Key Dates & Deadlines

• Enrollment Start: September 2027.
• Application Deadline (Data): Friday, October 9, 2026.
• Doctoral Program Note: There is no separate entrance examination to apply directly into the SDG-P Doctoral program. However, students who successfully complete the Master's Program are permitted to seamlessly enter the Doctoral Program.

3. Step-by-Step Application Process

Applying as an international student involves a sequence of steps to ensure all your documents and qualifications are evaluated correctly.

1. Find a Prospective Supervisor: You must find a professor whose research aligns with your goals and contact them directly before applying. (You can use the Student-written Research Laboratory Guidebook or Technology Seeds on the NUT website to find matches).
2. Prior Qualification Screening: All applicants must undergo a qualification screening before submitting their final application by the October 9, 2026 deadline.
3. Prepare Application Documents: Gather all necessary health, academic, and identification documents (listed in Section 4). All documents must be filled out in English or Japanese using a computer or a black ballpoint pen.
4. Pay the Screening Fee: Once NUT receives and confirms your application documents, they will send you a URL for the "e-apply" portal. You must pay the application screening fee via credit card on this portal and submit the downloaded payment receipt.
5. Await Results & Visa Processing: If accepted, NUT will guide you through the process of obtaining your Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for your Japanese student visa.

4. Required Application Documents

Prior to submission, you must include a completed Check Sheet to verify that all materials are enclosed.

A. Mandatory University Forms

• Form A (Application Form for Admission): Must be printed double-sided.
• Form B (Field of Study and Research Plan): Must be printed double-sided.
• Form C (Recommendation Letter): This letter MUST be issued and signed by the head of your academic department (or a higher-ranking official like a Dean).
• Form D (Certificate of Health): Must be completed by a physician.

B. Personal & Academic Records

• Proof of Citizenship: A copy of your passport OR an official Certificate of Citizenship from your home country.
• Graduation Certificate: Your official Certificate of Bachelor's Degree (or a document confirming your expected graduation/degree date).
• Academic Transcripts: Official transcripts from your undergraduate program.
• Proof of English Proficiency: If using TOEFL, you must request ETS to send your Official Score Report directly to NUT using DI Code: G255. You must also include the Test Taker Score Report in your application package.

C. Optional but Recommended Additions

• Brief Summary of Bachelor's Thesis.
• Report on Research and Professional Achievements.

5. Scholarship Opportunities

NUT offers two types of scholarships for students who pass the entrance exam and meet specific requirements. You can apply for these using the Application Form for SDG Professional Course Scholarship included in your application package.

Note: The two scholarships cannot be awarded concurrently. The top three candidates are recommended for the MEXT scholarship, and the next three candidates receive the SDG Scholarship.
