1. Program Overview
The Morehead-Cain Global Fellows Program is a preeminent, fully funded one-year undergraduate exchange fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in the United States. Designed for exceptional student leaders who have completed two years of university study, the program enables fellows to undertake full-time coursework, conduct self-directed research, engage in leadership development, and build global networks before returning to graduate from their home institutions.
2. About the Program
Administered by the Morehead-Cain Foundation, the Global Fellows Program brings together high-potential emerging leaders from around the world to Chapel Hill. The fellowship aims to foster:
- Academic & Research Exploration: Unbounded, self-directed study and interdisciplinary learning across top-tier faculties.
- Intentional Leadership Cultivation: Specialized workshops, mentorship, and immersive experiences that sharpen problem-solving and ethical decision-making skills.
- Global Community & Network: Lifelong membership in the global Morehead-Cain network of scholars and alumni across industry and policy domains.
3. Financial Support
The fellowship provides full financial coverage for the entire academic year. Recipients receive:
- Tuition & Mandatory Academic Fees: Completely covered.
- Housing & Living Expenses: Full coverage for accommodation and meals.
- Travel & Exploration Allowances: Fully funded international and domestic travel experiences within the United States.
- Leadership & Enrichment Funding: Support for custom workshops, summer projects, and leadership initiatives.
4. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for nomination and selection for the 2027–2028 cohort, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Expected Graduation Date | Must be scheduled to graduate in or after Spring 2029 from their home institution. |

Leadership Profile | Must demonstrate strong academic performance, self-directed learning, resilience, curiosity, integrity, and a commitment to community impact. |
5. Program Structure
- Academic Load: Fellows enroll as full-time UNC students, taking 30–36 credit hours per academic year (5–6 courses per semester).
- Course Selection: Access to over 70 majors and hundreds of elective courses across disciplines such as Business, Computer Science, Public Health, Journalism, Global Studies, Neuroscience, and Environmental Science.
- Enrichment & Travel: Program-funded trips across the United States to explore leadership, technology, finance, policy, and media environments.
6. Academic Flexibility & Credit Transfer
- Open Curriculum: Fellows are not restricted to taking courses strictly within their home university major. They are encouraged to explore new fields and interdisciplinary studies.
- Official Recognition: Upon completion, fellows receive an official UNC academic transcript listing completed coursework, along with a Morehead-Cain Global Fellow Certificate.
- Degree Completion: Fellows do not graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill; they return to their home university to complete their degree requirements.
- Credit Transfers: Credit transfer approval is coordinated directly between the fellow and their home institution.

Interactive Zoom sessions are hosted by the Morehead-Cain team for prospective nominees, applicants, and institutional advisors:

8. Application Process & Deadlines

- Confirm Eligibility: Verify academic progress (4 completed semesters by August 2027).
- Faculty Nomination: Obtain a formal nomination from a faculty member or institutional department head.
- Submit Application Online: Complete and submit the online application via the official portal. Students may begin and submit their portion of the application before their nominator completes the nomination form.
9. Required Documents & Nomination Requirements
- Faculty Recommendation / Nomination Form: Submitted directly online by the home university nominator.
- Official Academic Transcripts: Documenting all undergraduate coursework to date.
- Personal & Leadership Essays: Submitted via the Global Fellows application portal.
