ANU Future Research Talent (FRT) 2027

1. Program Overview

The Future Research Talent (FRT) Awards are jointly offered by the Australian National University (ANU) to exceptional students from India. The 2027 FRT program allows selected scholars to travel to Australia to pursue collaborative research projects alongside ANU staff for a period of 11 to 12 weeks.

The FRT is a highly competitive and prestigious program designed to attract the very best international students from top-tier Indian institutions. It provides hands-on exposure to world-class ANU research in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical (STEMM) disciplines. 3. Financial Support

• Grant Value: The standard value of the FRT award is up to AUD $8,500.
• Covered Expenses: The funds must be utilized to directly support your participation in collaborative research at ANU. The grant is allocated towards costs such as return airfares, visas (including any associated medical expenses), travel insurance, accommodation, and general living expenses.
• Fund Management: The management of the award funds is the responsibility of the student, and the funds must be fully expended within 12 months. Any expenses incurred beyond the award amount are the responsibility of the student.

4. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for an FRT award, you must meet the following baseline requirements:

• Citizenship: Be an Indian citizen currently residing in India.
• Academic Standing: Demonstrate a high level of academic ability and strong research potential.
• Enrollment: Be actively enrolled in a degree program at IIT Madras that includes a research component.
• Discipline: Be seeking to undertake a research project in the specific STEMM fields proposed by the ANU Colleges.
• First-Time Applicant: You must not have previously received an FRT award.
• Diversity: ANU is highly committed to addressing the under-representation of women in science and mathematics. Female students are strongly encouraged to apply, as the program aims to select a gender-balanced pool of FRT scholars.

5. Program Structure

• Duration: The research placement lasts for 11 to 12 weeks.
• Timing: Placements typically occur between May and July.
• Research Areas: Students will choose from over 90 available research projects across various disciplines, including Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Medical Research.

6. Selection & Evaluation

• Holistic Evaluation: Nominated candidates are evaluated not just on grades, but on scientific skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, personal drive, and communication skills.
• Project Alignment: You must demonstrate a clear alignment between your past academic background/research interests and the specific ANU project(s) you are applying to join.

7. Code of Practice

• Workplace Standards: All selected scholars must comply with the ANU Code of Practice for Research Placements. This means adhering strictly to all laboratory safety, ethics, and academic integrity standards while at the university.

8. Application Process and Deadline

• Step 1: Apply for Internal Nomination: You cannot apply directly to ANU first. You must be selected and shortlisted by the IIT Madras review committee. Please submit your application for internal review here:IITM ANU FRT 2027 Application Form.
• Step 2: Internal Deadline: The strict deadline to submit your internal nomination application via the link above is 5th September 2026.
• Step 3: Final Submission to ANU: If you are shortlisted by IIT Madras, you will receive a unique, one-time-use nomination ID and an online application link to formally apply to ANU. Do not share this ID publicly. The final external deadline for ANU is Friday, 25 September 2026.

9. Required Documents

When applying for your internal nomination, you will need to prepare the following documents:

• Updated CV / Resume.
• Official Academic Transcripts.
• Statement of Purpose (outlining your research interests and project alignment).
• Two Academic Reference Letters: Your referees must evaluate your skills and provide a written statement (maximum 300 words) justifying why you should be considered for the award. Tip: Reach out to your professors well before the internal deadline to ensure they have enough time to write a strong, thoughtful evaluation.

10. Post-Award & Completion Requirements

• Deliverables: Upon completing your 11-12 week research placement, you are required to submit a research poster or a final report (maximum 1,500 words) detailing your findings within 28 days of your placement ending.
• Visa & Insurance: If selected, you will likely need to apply for the Temporary Activity visa (Subclass 408) – Research Activities stream. To meet Australian visa requirements, you must hold adequate health insurance for the entire duration of your stay. You can use a portion of your AUD $8,500 grant to cover this mandatory expense. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
