Fields–Mitacs Undergraduate Summer Research Program (FUSRP) 2026
Dear Students,
We are pleased to announce the Fields–Mitacs Undergraduate Summer Research Program (FUSRP) 2026, a 9-week fully funded undergraduate research program in mathematics and related areas hosted at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto, Canada, in collaboration with Mitacs and the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto.
Program details:
- Program duration: 01 June – 31 July 2026 (9 weeks)
- Location: Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto, Ontario (some projects may be co-hosted by Western University, London, Ontario, or supervised remotely)
- Research areas: Mathematics, applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, data science, and related quantitative fields
- Program goal: To provide a high-quality, collaborative research experience for undergraduates, with strong mentorship and exposure to cutting-edge problems
Eligibility :
- Strong undergraduate students in mathematics, computer science, data science, or closely related quantitative disciplines
- Excellent academic record (typically a minimum of ~85% or equivalent CGPA)
- Genuine interest in research and in pursuing further study or a research career
- Good written and spoken English to participate effectively in research discussions and teamwork
Funding and support :
- Up to CAD 8,000 total funding for selected students
- Support typically includes:
- Round-trip airfare (up to approx. CAD 1,800)
- Housing and meal support during the 9-week stay
- Health insurance
- The Fields Institute provides:
- Office/desk space and access to research facilities
- Organized research projects with supervisors and small student groups
- Professional development and networking activities
IIT Madras nomination timeline (Institutional Nomination Only):
- This opportunity is by institutional nomination only. Students must not apply directly through the Fields / FUSRP student application form.

Project selection (what you must do before nomination):
- Carefully review the available projects listed under “Research Projects” on the FUSRP website:
- You may select up to 3 projects you would like to be considered for.
- Projects may be based at:
- Fields Institute (Toronto, ON)
- Western University (London, ON)
- Some supervisors may supervise remotely
- If you are strongly interested in only one project, you may list that as Project 1 and select “N/A” for Project 2 and Project 3 in the nomination form.
Documents required for IITM nomination:
- You will submit your application through the IITM nomination form. Be prepared with the following:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV / Résumé)
- Cover Letter (max 500 words)
- Must be tailored to the specific 1–3 projects you have selected
- Clearly explain your motivation, relevant background, skills, and why you are a good fit for the chosen projects
- Note: You will be considered only through IITM institutional nomination. Do NOT apply through the Fields website.
- Academic transcripts
- Official or unofficial transcripts for all relevant semesters of your current degree
- Project preferences
- Titles/names of Project 1 (mandatory), and optionally Project 2 and Project 3, exactly as listed on the FUSRP project page
- 2–3 reference letters
- You must arrange 2 mandatory and 1 optional reference letters
- Each letter should be written by a faculty member or supervisor who can comment on your academic performance, research potential, work ethic, and interpersonal skills
- Upload their signed reference letter in PDF format
Shortlisted candidates will be forwarded to the FUSRP organizing team through the dedicated institutional nomination link. Final selections and offers will be made by the Fields–Mitacs program.
Important note:
- This program runs through a special Fields–Mitacs–India collaboration. Students from IIT Madras will be considered only via IITM’s institutional nomination, not via the general FUSRP student application link.
- Please ensure all documents (including reference letters) are ready before the IITM deadline of 20 December 2025.
