Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships 2027-28
1. Program Overview
The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships (2027–28) provide opportunities for Indian scholars registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution to conduct 6 to 9 months of essential research at a U.S. university or institution. These prestigious fellowships are jointly funded by the Governments of India and the United States.
2. About the program
Administered by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), the program is designed to build long-term capacity to address global challenges and develop innovative solutions in key priority areas. Selected scholars will conduct research, audit non-degree courses at U.S. institutions, and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the U.S.
3. Financial details
The fellowship provides comprehensive funding, which includes:

- ✈️ Travel: Round-trip economy class air travel between India and the U.S.
- 🛂 Visa Support: Full J-1 visa support.
- 🏥 Health Coverage: Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per U.S. Government guidelines.

- Note: No allowances are provided for dependents under this specific grant.

Proposals should be futuristic, innovative, and technology-focused, falling strictly within these priority areas:
- Critical Minerals and Supply Chains: Geology, Materials Science, Mining Engineering.
- Defense and Security: Cybersecurity, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics and Autonomous Systems.
- Energy Security: Energy Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Energy Innovation and Technology Commercialization.
- Science and Research Collaboration: Bioengineering, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductor Engineering.
- Space Cooperation: Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Space Systems Engineering, Satellite Communications.
- Technology and Innovation: Data Science, Quantum Computing, Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
5. Eligibility & General Prerequisites
- Citizenship & Residency: Must be a responsible Indian citizen. Cannot hold a U.S. permanent resident status (green card) or foreign PR. Must not be residing in the U.S. during the recruitment/placement cycle (Feb 2026-July 2027).
- Academic Status: Must be registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution on or before November 1, 2025.
- Thesis Timeline: Expected Ph.D. thesis submission date must be at least three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date.
- Commitment: Must give an undertaking to return to India upon completion of the fellowship.
- Employment: If employed, must be eligible for leave and submit an Employer's Endorsement Form.
- Preferences: Preference is given to candidates who do not have extensive recent experience in the U.S.
6. Program Structure
- Duration: 6 to 9 months.
- Program Start: August/September 2027.
- Supervision: One recommendation letter MUST be from the applicant's current Ph.D. supervisor confirming the PhD registration date and topic.

8. Important Rules & Disclaimers
- One Category Rule: You can apply for only ONE Fulbright-Nehru fellowship category during a competition cycle.
- No Visa Transfers: Extensions and transfers of visa sponsorship will not be permitted.
- Plagiarism & GenAI Warning: Plagiarism detected at any time will lead to disqualification. Many U.S. universities scan for Generative AI (GenAI) usage; copying language directly from GenAI into your application may negatively impact your admission or affiliation decisions.
- Travel Notification: If you plan to travel abroad during the application cycle (Feb 2026-July 2027), you must notify USIEF in advance.
