Dear Students,

We are pleased to announce the AOTULE Summer Program 2026 at the Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan. This is a three-month research-oriented program for engineering students.

Program Details

Program Name: AOTULE Summer Program 2026
Duration: 1 June 2026 – 31 August 2026 (3 months)
Location: Tokyo/Yokohama, Japan
Host Institution: Institute of Science Tokyo

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to the following students:

  1. Postgraduate students: Master's, MS, and PhD students (all years)
  2. Final-year undergraduate students: B.Tech and Dual Degree students who will be in their final year during the program period
  3. Students from Engineering disciplines across all departments
  4. Must maintain student status at IIT Madras during the entire program period (1 June - 31 August 2026)

Important: Students who will graduate before August 2026 or during the program period are NOT eligible. You must still be enrolled at IIT Madras throughout June-August 2026.

Important: Students planning to graduate before the program ends are NOT eligible.

Program Features

  • Individual research project under Science Tokyo faculty supervision
  • Coursework on advanced engineering topics
  • Basic Japanese language classes
  • Participation in 17th Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop (MISW2026)
  • Japanese culture immersion activities and technical institute visits
  • Networking with international researchers from AOTULE member universities

Financial Support

  • Daily allowance: Approximately JPY 2,000 per day
  • Tuition fees: Completely waived by Science Tokyo
  • Accommodation: Designated dormitory provided (students pay a portion of accommodation fees)
  • Note: Students must arrange their own round-trip airfare to/from Japan at their own expense

Important Program Requirements

  • Mandatory check-in at designated dormitory on Sunday, 1 June 2026 (daytime)
  • Mandatory check-out on Sunday, 31 August 2026
  • Students cannot leave Japan during the program period except for emergencies (health/family issues)
  • Students planning to attend international conferences outside Japan during the program period are NOT eligible
  • Must obtain Student Visa (mandatory for all participants, including those from visa-waiver countries)
  • Must enroll in Science Tokyo On-campus Accident/Liability Insurance upon arrival
  • Must join National Health Insurance System in Japan

Selection Process

IIT Madras will conduct an internal selection process to nominate students. Selected nominees will be forwarded to Science Tokyo for final selection.

Documents Required

  1. Faculty Advisor Approval
  2. Official Transcript (with grading system guidelines)
  3. Passport Copy (pages showing name, nationality, and photo)
  4. Updated CV/Resume
  5. Statement of Purpose (maximum 500 words)

Important: Incomplete documents, late submissions, and applications without faculty advisor approval will NOT be accepted.
