The Semester Exchange Program offers international students the opportunity to study at the IIT Madras campus and become part of the institution’s strong research-driven ethos. It provides students with exposure to IIT Madras’s rigorous education system and vibrant research ecosystem.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at a partner institution.

  • Must be formally nominated by partner institution.

  • Should have proof of English language proficiency

The partner university nominates the candidate for the program.

The student logs in to the SSP portal and selects courses.

Selected courses are reviewed and approved or rejected by the faculty.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Semester Exchange Programme at IIT Madras provides international students from partner universities an opportunity to study at IIT Madras for one semester or up to one academic year. Students attend courses alongside IIT Madras students and experience the institute’s academic and research environment.
The programme is open to students enrolled at universities that have an academic partnership or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras. Applicants must be nominated by their home university’s international office or exchange programme coordinator.

The exchange programme typically lasts for:

  • - One semester (approximately 4–6 months)
  • - One academic year (two semesters), depending on the agreement with the partner institution.
Exchange students may enroll in undergraduate or postgraduate courses offered by various departments at IIT Madras, subject to academic eligibility and approval from the respective departments.
Students select courses at IIT Madras that align with their degree requirements at their home university. Upon completion of the exchange programme, academic transcripts are issued, allowing the home institution to transfer the earned credits toward the student’s degree.
Yes. English is the primary medium of instruction for all courses at IIT Madras.
Yes. International exchange students are generally provided on-campus hostel accommodation, subject to institute policies and availability.
