He works in both, experimental and computational mechanics ranging from material testing to response of real-life structures with an interest in Mechanics-based monitoring strategies for condition assessment of Bridges. He has handled continuous health monitoring of railway bridges, such as Scherzer Span of Pamban Bridge, a steel plate girder bridge and is the recipient of Mathematics Research Impact Centric Award, SERB.

Thin Films Mechanics

Krishna Jonnalagadda

Professor - Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay

He works on thin films mechanics, high strain rate testing and material testing at high temperatures and is the Associate Technical editor of Experimental Mechanics and Executive Council member of Indian Structural Integrity Society. He is the recipient of Hetenyi award of SEM in 2012 and DRDO Academy excellence award in 2020.

Ashok Kumar Pandey

Professor – Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, IIT Hyderabad

He has worked in multiphysics modelling of different phenomena in MEMS resonant devices, conducted several workshops on MEMS and was the convenor for nanoscience and nanotechnology for IITH-JICA friendship project. Recipient of Hetenyi award in 2010 from SEM and has won several awards for teaching.

Gannavarpu Rajshekhar

Associate Professor – Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur

Ph.D. in Photonics from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. His research interests are in the domain of optical coherent imaging, non-destructive precision metrology and biophotonics. Recipient of IIT Kanpur P K Kelkar Young Faculty Research Fellowship, SERB Early Career Research Award, teaching excellence awards from IIT Kanpur and Instrument Society of India, and Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship.

Heritage Structures

Arun Menon

Professor – Dept. of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras

Internationally acclaimed expert on restoration of Heritage structures. His research interests are in structural aspects of historical constructions, earthquake behavior of historical masonry structures and earthquake-resistant structural masonry. He has been involved in various conservation projects in India (Kedarnath, Madurai Meenakshi Temple, Arunachaleshwar Temple etc.), Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Philippines. Expert member for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Bagan in Myanmar and Vat Phou in Laos. He currently coordinates the activities of National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures (NCSHS), MHRD.

Senior Professor – Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras

His areas of research include composite materials, nano materials, structural crashworthiness, and impact mechanics. He is involved in many consultancy and sponsored projects from many DRDO Labs, ISRO Centers, Government agencies, and many Industries. He has delivered many Plenary/invited lectures in International and National conferences and is among the top 2% of the scientific community in his field of expertise. He served as member of Editorial Board, Journal of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies and is in the Editorial board of Defence Technology (Elsevier). He Served as Guest Editor of Int. Journal of Impact Engineering, Thin-walled Structures, Defence Technology and Materials Today Proceedings, and Edited Six books related to Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

High Strain-rate Behaviour

P Venkitanarayanan

Professor – Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur

He is an expert in the field of experimental solid mechanics, dynamic fracture mechanics, high strain rate mechanics and failure using optical techniques. Prof. Venkitanarayanan was an associate editor of Experimental Mechanics and currently serves as the associate editor for the Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials. He is an excellent teacher and has received the Zandman award for 2019 from the Society of Experimental Mechanics.

Fatigue and Fracture

Anuradha Banerjee

Professor – Dept. of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras

She works in the broad area of solid mechanics with a focus on both computational and experimental studies related to fracture and fatigue in structural metals, fiber reinforced composites, functionally graded materials, heterogeneous brittle materials, and bio-materials. Her noteworthy achievements include receiving the IITM Young Faculty Recognition Award in 2011

Microscale Imaging of Transport Phenomena

P K Panigrahi

Professor - Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur

He has implemented several experimental techniques (primarily optical) in both large and small-scale systems i.e., interferometry, LDV, Schlieren, holography, LCT, PIV, LIF, IRT, thermophoretic sampling, scattering etc. that has resulted in 3 patents, 2 books and 2 monographs. The experimental techniques have been used for investigation and design of several energy systems i.e., gas turbine blade cooling, fluid structure interaction, combustion, battery cooling, crystal growth, gas hydrate, electro-atomization, jet mixing, synthetic jet, DBD plasma actuator, thermal hydraulics of nuclear power plant, drug delivery system, underwater vehicle etc. He is the recipient of Swarna Jayanti fellowship, AICTE Career award, BOYSCAST fellowship, R C Nigam Chair Professor and Humboldt fellowship.

Pushpavanam S

YBG Varma Institute Chair Professor - Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras

His research areas include multiphase flows, microfluidics and focuses both fundamental and applied aspects. His current thrust is on development of paper based microfluidic devices for point of care diagnostics and environmental monitoring. He has written 2 books and holds 10 patents. He is the recipient of Fullbright Fellowship, Raja Ram Bapu Award for the best teacher in Engineering colleges in India, and Max Planck Fellowship. He has served as a visiting faculty at University of Ghent Belgium and Max Planck Institute for the Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg, Germany. He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He has been on the Editorial Board of Advances in Chemical Engineering and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research.

PIV, Schlieren and Shadowgraph

Principal Scientist – Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur

His mastery extends across an array of sophisticated techniques encompassing Hotwire anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry, shadowgraph, and Schlieren methodologies. He is a known specialist on experimental aerodynamics, with a focal emphasis on drag reduction, compressible vortex ring dynamics, shock/blast wave mitigation strategies, impulsive flows, and the computational fluid dynamics governing compressible flows. His profound expertise and dedication in these arenas mark him as a trailblazer in the field, contributing significantly to the advancement and understanding of aerodynamic phenomena and their practical applications. He is also an associate professor at the esteemed AcSIR, where he has adeptly mentored numerous master's and doctoral students, channelling his profound knowledge and expertise in the realm of flow diagnosing tools.

Optical Tomography

Nilesh Jayantilal Vasa

Professor - Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras

His research interests include laser micromanufacturing, laser-assisted sensing, optomechatronics, and biophotonics devices. His current research involves the development of an electro-optically tuned optical coherence tomography (OCT) for imaging, trace gas sensing for human breath analysis, and laser-assisted surface engineering for functional device applications. His work on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy technique for elemental analysis has been used in the Chandrayan mission. He has researched on using lasers to suit real-world applications as well as to suit future society's needs. A range of studies he has done include: Laser-assisted surface treatment technique for photovoltaic and micromanufacturing applications, Laser assisted gas sensing and combustion analysis. He holds a few patents in these areas and has received the JASSO and DAAD fellowships.

Srikrishna Sahu

Associate Professor - Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras

His research interest includes development and application of different optical diagnostics in Multiphase Flows and Combustion studies. He works on spray dynamics, particle-turbulence interaction, liquid atomization, droplet evaporation and combustion, spray-wall interaction. He has received many awards that include: Best Teacher Award in Mechanical Engineering, Katopodis Prize for the best Thermofluids PhD Thesis, Gold medal in 8th Osborne Reynolds Research student award, Silver medal in 5th ERCOFTAC Da Vinci Award.

Flow Visualisation

A P Baburaj

Professor - Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras

His research interests include coherent structures in turbulent convection, interfacial phenomena and transport across membranes. The research focus has been to understand the nature of buoyancy driven turbulence, the methods of heat transfer from hot surfaces, detection of buoyancy dominated coherent structures etc. In interfacial phenomena, he has studied surface tension driven film spreading at an interface, boiling, evaporation, condensation and percolation in porous media. He has also been interested in density driven transport across microporous membranes that occur in many biological systems. Two of his articles have come in the cover page of Journal of Fluid Mechanics.

Mechanobiology and Biomaterials

Anita Singh

Associate Professor - Bioengineering Department at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA

She is currently involved in understanding the biomechanical, functional, and structural injury thresholds for neonatal brachial plexus palsy. Her research has focused on developing a new model of traumatic axonal injury that offers the possibility of improving the understanding of white matter tract damage in the brain during and after a traumatic event. She is involved in investigating a new combinatorial treatment strategy using bioengineered scaffolds and a robotic training paradigm in spinally contused and transected rats. She has been the co-director of Behavior and Biomechanics Core at Drexel University, College of Medicine and has also served in a medical device company. She is the recipient of the prestigious NIH R01 and NSF-CAREER awards and has received awards at national and international conferences. Her research is funded by several foundations as well as the Department of Defense.

Bioinstrumentation and Biomedical Devices

Yuvaraj Rajamanickam

Research Scientist - National Institute of Education, NTU, Singapore

His primary research interests are machine learning algorithms, with applications to biomedical signal analysis that include affective computing, brain-machine interface, neurological disorder diagnosis, and cognitive neuroscience. His current research works focuses on affective computing in education using neurophysiological signals. He has received the Young Scientist Research Award of SERB, GOI, Best invention in Biotechnology from Japan Intellectual Property Association and has won two gold medals from Malaysian Technology Expo.





Cellular and Tissue Mechanics

Kirti Prakash

Senior Staff Scientist – Biomedical Research Centre, Institute of Cancer Research

Kirti leads the computational team working on immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridisation, and multiplex experiments. He aspires to be an inventor and develop new imaging tools for cancer biology. During his PhD, he developed a new method to image DNA which led to the first high-resolution images of meiotic chromosomes. This earned him several awards including Springer Best PhD Thesis Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, UK.








Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing

Sujatha N

Professor – Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras

Her research interests are optical diagnostic imaging and spectroscopy, the interaction of light with biological matter, instrumentation, and data analytics in biophotonics. Her lab on Biophotonics focuses on developing non-invasive tools for disease diagnosis based on optical principles. Using physics of light-tissue interaction, the chemical composition and architecture of the target tissue is extracted to understand the biology of tissue transformation during the progression of diseases. Her research focus is more on developing clinically viable non-invasive portable units for sensing the physiological conditions in a convenient way. This involves large scale data analysis and interpretation using machine learning / deep learning techniques. She holds two patents and many of her students have won best paper award in conferences She has organised many conferences and the recent one is on Women in Optics and Photonics in India (WOPI 2023) supported by SPIE.

Biomedical and Health Informatics

Nagarajan Ganapathy

Assistant Professor - Department of Biomedical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad

His research interests are affective computing, deep and quantum Learning, wearable analytics, computer vision and behavioural Informatics. Presently, he heads the Medical Informatics Lab at IIT Hyderabad. He is a visiting scientist at the Peter L. Reichertz for Medical Informatics of TU Braunschweig and Hannover Medical School (PLRI), Germany. He is a recipient of the DAAD fellowship, DAAD Research Ambassador, and Sakura Science award. He has organised many workshops and conferences.

IC/Hybrid Engine Development

A Ramesh

Institute Chair Professor – Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras

His current research includes hybrid electric drives, hot surface ignition engines, GDI engines, RCCI engines, engine control and innovative engine technologies. His diverse work in sponsored and industrial consultancy in the Automotive sector has resulted in more than 20 patents. While Chairing the Centre for Continuing Education, he initiated the Web Enabled M. Tech programs for candidates from industries and was instrumental in establishing the Automotive Laboratories at NCCRD at IIT Madras. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from SAE India, Gem of ACCET award, Srimathi Marti Annapurna Gurunath Award for Excellence in Teaching and Baghyalakshmi Krishna Iyenger Award, five times at IIT Madras.




Design Validation

S Pandian

Visiting Professor - Dept. of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras

He was responsible for the aerodynamic characterization of various Launch Vehicles viz., ASLV, PSLV, GSLV, LVM3, Reusable Launch Vehicle, Air Breathing Rockets and sounding rockets through wind tunnel tests and CFD computations. He was instrumental in arriving at the final aerodynamic data for mission design, structural design, and acoustic data for the Environmental Level qualification of various electronic packages and systems. He is responsible for the design, development, and commissioning of one-meter Hypersonic Wind Tunnel in ISRO. He has held many high administrative positions including Director – ISRO Propulsion Research Complex, Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), Vice President of Aeronautical Society of India among other National level responsibilities. He is the Fellow of INAE, IE, Aeronautical Society and Astronautical Society of India and he has won numerous awards notably, Distinguished Alumnus of IISc Bangalore, Eminent Engineer Award from Institution of Engineers and Life-time achievement award of National Instruments.

Sports Mechanics

Babji Srinivasan

Associate Professor - Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras

His research interests include cognitive systems engineering, behavioural informatics and sports tech & analytics. He is a cricketer and a badminton enthusiast. He is in-charge of the Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) at IIT Madras and his research is focused on development of sports tech products for analyzing the performance of athletes in various sports and works with various sports academies including IIS, SAI, MRF foundation and various IPL teams. Recipient of young faculty research award (YFRA) of IIT Madras in the year 2022, KR-IR award in the year 2022 and his students have received multiple institute research awards.

Locomotion and Rehabilitation

Sujatha Srinivasan

Professor - Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras

Her translational research focuses on applying design and biomechanics to develop functional and affordable assistive/rehabilitation devices for people with movement disability, of which four have been commercialized with industry partners through a unique collaborative approach called the GRID Model. She heads the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) and the new National Center for Assistive Health Technologies (NCAHT-IITM) at IIT Madras. She is the co-founder of IITM-incubated startups on assistive devices, namely, NeoMotion and the upcoming Thryv Mobility, and is co-inventor of 35+ patents. Recipient of several awards including the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship and Honorary Professorship at University College London, UK.
