VISA

U.S. citizens require a multiple-entry visa (about US $100). Most other nationalities can obtain a single-entry visa (about US $50) or apply for an eVisa. It’s best to apply online in advance to avoid delays at the airport.

Mandatory Travel Insurance

  • All foreign visitors must purchase travel insurance through the official Zanzibar Insurance Corporation portal: https://inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz/
  • Cost: US $44 for most visitors; US $22 for SADC citizens and children aged 3–17; free for children under 3.
  • Coverage: valid up to 92 days, includes medical emergencies, accidents, repatriation, and lost baggage.
  • This policy is mandatory, even if you already have personal travel insurance. Avoid third-party websites.

Health Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination card is required if you are arriving from or transiting through an endemic country. It’s still recommended to carry proof of vaccination regardless.

Currency

  • The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the official currency.
  • USD is widely accepted in hotels, tours, and tourist areas.
