Public Lecture by Professor S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan (Courant Institute, New York University)
Large Deviations, Theory and Application
Abstract
Although developed initially to estimate the probability of catastrophic losses in the insurance industry, the theory has found applications in the areas of mathematical physics and statistics. We will look at them.
Speaker Bio
Professor S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan is one of the world’s foremost researchers in probability theory. His foundational work on diffusion processes, development of the theory of large deviations and results on hydrodynamic limits have had far-reaching impact. His deep and influential ideas have shaped contemporary probability and its interfaces with analysis, physics, and applied mathematics. For his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations, Professor Varadhan was awarded the Abel Prize (2007) and is widely regarded as one of the most influential mathematicians of his generation.
