How to Reach
Note: If you are travelling from the airport/train station or any other place from Chennai city, then please book your prepaid taxi/ola/uber up to the guesthouse/hostel/conference venue. Don’t get down at the main gate, because it’s too far. In case you get down at the main gate then please use the institute bus to reach the destination. If you are taking the institute bus then please ask the bus driver how to reach your destination.
By Air
Chennai is served by the Chennai International Airport (MAA), which has both domestic and international terminals.
From the Airport to IIT Madras:
- Taxi: Prepaid and app-based taxi services like Uber and Ola are readily available at the airport. The drive to IIT Madras typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
- Public Transport: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses and suburban trains are available, though they may be less convenient if you’re traveling with luggage.
By Train
Chennai is well-connected by rail to various parts of India.
- Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station (MAS): Offers connections to major cities across India.
- Chennai Egmore (MS): Primarily serves cities within Tamil Nadu and neighboring states.

If you are catching MRTS connection adjacent to Chennai central, then get down at Kasturba Nagar and reach IITM.
If you are taking a metro connection, then please get down at Little Mount metro station and then hire an auto/ app based taxis to reach your destination at IITM. - From Chennai Egmore: Similar transport options are available, with a shorter travel time of around 20-30 minutes (MRTS & Metro are available).
By Road
Chennai’s interstate bus terminus connects the city by multiple National Highways.
From the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus to IIT Madras:
- Buses: A variety of state-run and private buses provide connections between Chennai and other cities.
- Public Transport: If you plan to drive to Chennai, use GPS navigation to reach IIT Madras, which is situated in the Guindy area.
From the CMBT Bus Terminus to IIT Madras:
- Buses: A variety of state-run and private buses connect Chennai with other cities from the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu.
- Public Transport: CMBT is well-served by local buses and is easily accessible via metro services.
Reaching IIT Madras
IIT Madras is centrally located in Chennai and is accessible by various modes of transport.
- Taxi/Auto-rickshaw: Easily accessible from anywhere in Chennai for convenient transport to IIT Madras.
- Bus: Several MTC buses stop near the IIT Madras campus, with key stops being "Adyar Gate" and "CLRI."
- Metro: The nearest metro station is "Guindy." From there, you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach IIT Madras.
Inside IIT Madras: After arriving at the main gate, you can use the campus shuttle service to get to your destination, such as the ICSR building. As the campus is vast and green, a campus map or guidance from the main gate security can be very helpful.
