About

About IRCOBI

IRCOBI was founded in 1973 under the leadership of Professor Bertil Aldman who chaired it for almost 20 years. Its formation was the result of an ever-increasing international recognition of road-transport related mortality and morbidity, culminated by an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report in 1969 that proposed 5 co-operating programmes, one of which was on accident biomechanics and another on human tolerance to impact and the kinematics of impact injuries. A small group of researchers from Europe decided to combine these two programmes and eventually formed the first version of IRCOBI in 1973, which then stood for the International Research Committee on the Biokinetics of Impact, before becoming the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Impact in 1992 and the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury in 2007 to reflect more accurately its overall mission and its wider remit.

IRCOBI’s mission is to

  • encourage research on impact biomechanics and injury mechanisms;
  • provide a forum for the presentation and dissemination of such research findings;
  • serve as an advisory body on issues relating to impact biomechanics and injury mechanisms;
  • foster, encourage, and support young researchers in the field;
  • improve the scientific basis on which injury prevention, safety, and crashworthiness standards are formulated.

The IRCOBI conference

Since 1973 IRCOBI has been organising an annual, international scientific conference in Europe in order to review new knowledge and create a forum for dissemination of research and activity on human tolerance to impact and injury prevention. Typical topics presented include field-data and epidemiological studies, experimental and computational modelling of injury, and assessment of current mitigation systems, procedures, and devices. Specialized sessions and seminars feature often; recent topics have included trauma to children, two-wheeled vehicles and vulnerable road users, and human body modelling. The peer-reviewed proceedings of the IRCOBI conference are now recognized internationally as an important source of knowledge on impact biomechanics and crash-injury studies.

All previous conference proceedings can be found on our website: http://ircobi.org/wordpress/proceedings

The 2025 Asia edition of the IRCOBI conference

The IRCOBI Asia conference returns to India for its 2025 edition. The conference will take place on 25-27 June 2025 at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, INDIA. We will meet at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), building “Office of IC&SR”. The IIT Madras campus is in the heart of the Chennai city. Chennai which is considered "Detroit of the Southern Asia" is an apt location for a conference that focusses on vehicle safety in general and injury biomechanics in particular. IIT Madras has a thriving community working in general automotive research like the Center of Advance Automotive Research (CAAR), Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking (CoEZET), Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) and we offer academic programs in automotive engineering and initiatives in E-mobility.

We are expecting delegates from industry, research institutions, and academia. Chennai is well connected with an International airport (MAA), two railway stations – Chennai central (MAS) and Chennai Egmore (MS) and a bus terminus (Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus – Kilambakkam) and thus the conference is expected to have a good footfall.

Scope

IRCOBI’s scope is the biomechanics of injury. Historically, the focus of IRCOBI, has been the avoidance and reduction of the severity of injuries related to road-traffic collisions, with special emphasis on advanced safety technologies. Papers on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and prevention of injury in every-day life, sports, aviation, the military, etc. are welcome in addition to those on transportation-related injuries. Accordingly, we are interested in submissions in the following areas, as they pertain to the biomechanics of injury:

  • Collision and injury database analysis including crash reconstructions;
  • Injury biomechanics including injury mechanisms, injury criteria, and tissue mechanics (from cellular level to whole body);
  • Mechanical (crash test dummies) and computational models of active and passive human body response to loads that result in injury;
  • The effect of advanced accident avoidance and mitigation technologies and assessment methods on injury biomechanics;
  • Safety aspects of assisted and automated driving, within the context of injury biomechanics;
  • Advanced protection methods, including adaptive systems, for occupants (including children, elderly, and special groups), of all types of vehicles (e.g. car, bus, boat, train, plane, etc.), and of vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians and cyclists);
  • Crashworthiness (including compatibility) of vehicle designs;
  • Influence of vehicle and equipment design on injury outcome.
