York University Summer Abroad Programs 2023

Dear Students,

We would like to inform you about the upcoming York University Summer Abroad Programs.

It provides a unique opportunity for students to experience cultural immersion, learn about global issues, and enhance their language skills.

You can find the details below for more information:

  1. FILM 3375: Learning from Los Angeles: History of the Image and the Image of History (Film program)

·       Destination: Los Angeles / United States

·       Duration: May 30th to June 30th

·       This course will explore the fantastic histories, myths, and contradictions of the first modern media city, and the image it fashioned for itself.  As an experiential field course, it will blend screenings, readings, and field trips to focus on a variety of themes and topics about the city and its histories. While exploring the gilded legends from the silent to the studio era, the course will simultaneously take a street view of Los Angeles and connect students with the many communities and cultural organizations committed to its unknown and forgotten histories.

·       Deadline for application: April 15th, 2023

  1. THEA 2000/3000/4000: Prague Quadrennial (Theatre program)

·       Destination: Prague

·       Duration: June 5th to 19th

·       This course is a unique international, experiential education opportunity for students interested in theatre design, technical theatre, international touring, and festivals which only comes up every four years. This course will give participants a close-up look at the PQ and insight into the Canadian theatre design community.

·       Deadline for application: April 15th, 2023

  1. SP 3100: Advanced Spanish (Spanish program)

·       Destination: Taxco / Mexico

·       Duration: June 11th to 23rd

·       This course has been designed to help students develop the necessary linguistic precision (grammatical, lexical, phonetical, and especially pragmatic) while optimizing their strategies to effectively communicate in Spanish (in oral and written form). Organized in collaboration with our host institution, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), this experience abroad will give students the opportunity to live and study among Spanish-speaking students, affirm their knowledge of Spanish, and gain experience working alongside local artisans in community practice.

·       Deadline for application: April 15th, 2023

  1. THEA 2000/3000/4000: Edinburgh Production Practicum (Theatre program)

·       Destination: Edinburgh / Scotland

·       Duration: July 30th to August 28th

·       This course is a study-abroad course that offers upper-year Theatre majors the chance to participate in this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is an internationally recognized festival that celebrates Scottish and European culture and the performing arts in an epic 3-week adventure. As a practicum course, students will be writing, directing, and creating their own production with York’s own Fringe Theatre Company called YUFFA.  In this unique opportunity, students will be able to also get to know the culture of Edinburgh, the international theatre community, see other Fringe Fest shows, and be able to network and work with others in the industry.
