University of Exeter International Summer School 2021

Dear Sir/Madam,

University of Exeter has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s on campus International Summer School programme and instead put on an online programme.

This decision has been made with the wellbeing and experience of your students as the very top priority. While the situation in the UK is improving with the COVID-19 vaccination roll out, the start date of the on campus programme is very close to the earliest possible date for the removal of all social distancing restrictions and no guidelines are yet available for international travel to the UK. This means that we could be in a situation where students are either not able to fully interact with everyone or that there are several groups of students who cannot join us at all. We pride ourselves on the engagements and connections between students from all over the world and we don’t want to risk a potential lowering of the quality of the programme we can offer.

Our online programme will inevitably be different to our face to face programme as we have all learnt that simply replicating something online does not guarantee the highest student experience.

All students will still have the opportunity to study for credit on our 7.5 ECTS (3/4 US credit) modules via our engaging learning platform. This will involve both live interaction with our academic colleagues across the colleges and also pre-recorded content, including virtual field trips, to allow the students to manage their studies in their own time.

As well as the academic courses, we are also running a social networking programme to enable students to still interact with people from all over the world and learn about different cultures, including the UK. Part of this interaction will include a group challenge where students can collaborate to see if they can contribute solutions to social, technological and environmental issues facing the world. While we don’t expect them to put the world to rights, the idea is to inspire everyone to look at how they can make change and give more opportunity to see things from others’ perspectives, something which hasn’t been easily attainable in person now for a year.

We are also intending to run skills and knowledge sessions from our specialist teams in the university to help students prepare for life after their studies, including soft skills and study skills.

The programme fee for our accredited courses is £1,000 for one course or £1,500 for two courses and includes registration, access to our online library, and access and participation in our extracurricular activities.

Students from your institution who had already applied to our face to face programme have been contacted individually and given a further discount to apologise for having to cancel the face to face programme. Our application window will reopen on 22ndMarch for new applications to the online programme and will remain open until the middle of June.

If you would like more information on the programmes, please see our website or email us on iss@exeter.ac.uk

While we are very disappointed not to be able to meet everyone face to face this summer, we are very excited to welcome students virtually to the University of Exeter and would be very grateful if you were able to tell your students about this opportunity.

Please don’t hesitate to come back to me with any questions or concerns.
