About the Program
Research scholars are allowed to pursue their research interests at one of the international partner institutions for a period of 6 months to 1 year.
When a MS/PhD scholar spends a significant time abroad at a research facility for thesis/ project work/research work, there is a measurable gain to the scholar and to the Institutes/Universities involved.
General Procedure
Students are initially selected and admitted into the PhD programs at either Institute as per norms.
- The subsequent joint selection for JDP can be carried out within 6-12 months of the student enrolling in the PhD program.
- The supervisor at home institution must communicate with their collaborating faculty in the partner University.
- Once accepted, the collaborating faculty members become the respective students’ guide / supervisor. The collaborating faculty would be the co-guide who is to be appointed as adjunct faculty with the concerned department to be facilitated by the guide.
- The doctoral committee which will be set up to monitor the scholar will check on the progress till thesis is completed.
- Students have to pass a comprehensive examination which will be conducted by the DC of the student (as per the rules of the Home Institute).
- Scholar has to meet his/her academic requirements at the Home Institute.
- The supervisor shall officially drop a mail to dean AR approving the conversion.
- The students are to write a letter to Dean AR expressing the interest to convert the program from PhD to Joint PhD program after getting necessary approval from the supervisors/Co-Supervisors, HoD & all the DC members.
- JDP students must follow the rules and regulations of the Partner Institute as well as the Home Institute.

What kind of visa should I apply for?
Masters students can apply for student visa and PhD students are requested to apply for research visa.
Can a UG student do Research work?
Yes, UG students can apply for research work.
Can I apply for research work without an acceptance letter from IITM professor?
No, you can apply for research work only after an IITM faculty accepts to be your guide.
